STRUCTURE OF DESIGN PROCESS

The contemporary Russian construction and architectural conceptual approaches in many of their aspects are based on the regulatory base, traditions and diverse architectural schools that originated in the Soviet times.

During the Soviet times, architectural design projects were developed at big project design institutions, carried out by large teams, in a planned way. Many architects and engineers remember the times when they used to create their design projects by making hand drawings on large sheets of paper attached to the drawing board. However, the world is changing fast, as new technologies emerge; drawing boards became outdated, having been fully replaced by the PC with its numerous capabilities. Due to this change, a sole specialist, who has the respective professional skills and the necessary software, can perform the work that used to be carried out by a group of design project personnel of a given specialization. The design project process has changed drastically since the Soviet times. In the below article I would like to share my views on the key factors that influence the process of developing an architectural design project, which is the key element of the construction process.

Any design project starts with the conceptual vision of the architect charged with developing the project. It is the architect’s task to create an aesthetically right and constructively appropriate architectural object, based on the needs and wishes of the Customer, while taking into due consideration the existing priority factors and norms of the urban construction. The project design organization that is contracted to develop a design project of an architectural object is best suited to perform the function of the technical customer, to follow the project through all the stages - from receiving the technical specification, to going through the mandatory state project appraisal, to obtaining the construction permission.

Under current conditions, the design project work is the process of organizing a set of activities required for the completion of the design project, by engaging the highly qualified specialists. This process results in raising the overall quality of the finished project that meets all the existing construction requirements, while keeping the overall cost of work at a competitive level.

In the process of developing an architectural design project, due consideration is given to the existing architectural standards common to large cities and small towns, as the aesthetic component of the design project work bears a primary importance. It has to be noted that the quality of the architectural design, hence - of the construction process largely depends on the pace of carrying out the set task. In order to achieve a desired result in the development of an architectural design project, a rational for cooperative action has to be followed, that includes the appropriately structured order of diverse tasks implemented by all participants of the architectural design process.

The signature approach of Architecture SK Ltd. is the sole creation and follow-up of the architectural design project that includes the creation of the concept drawing and the outward appearance of the architectural object by the chief architect of the organization.

Furthermore, this approach ensures the most beneficial terms for the Customer, since the Customer solely deals with one person who is directly in charge of the architectural design process, as the architect who made the drawings takes into due consideration all the engineering requirements. The scheme of design process described above has already proven its high efficiency and it has resulted in a number of successfully constructed buildings. The possibility of developing a design project (creating the concept and then implementing it as a drawing) of, for instance, a large modern-looking residential building or a trade center, taking into consideration all the technical requirements for the respective engineering systems is the main aesthetical and technical task of an architect.

Compliance with the mandatory technical requirements is performed at the same time with the design process. The architectural part of the design project is done once, and is then adjusted as the details emerge in the process.

The results of the described scheme are: saving of the Customer’s time, the guaranteed timely receipt of the mandatory state appraisal/compliance documentation.
